A cool day with the sun struggling to get through and a cool northerly wind.
A major arrival of warblers (Reed, Sedge, Great Reed, Orphean, Blackcap, Lesser Whitethroat) and Collared Flycatchers and at least four Semi-collared Flys seen. Few Pied and no Spotted.
Paul Manning tells me its an excellent orchid year with 'thousands' of spikes.
Ipsilou - SEMI-COLLARED FLYCATCHER 3 (photo), Collared Flycatcher (loads), Pied Flycatcher, Cinereous Bunting, Lesser Kestrel, Isabelline Wheatear.
Vouvaris River - SEMI-COLLARED FLYCATCHER 1 near bridge.
Tsiknias River - PALLID HARRIER 2CY male at 1900h through to north over fields on west side of river, Montagu's Harrier fem (evening), Night-heron 3 (just north of main ford), Purple Heron 1, Squacco Heron 1, Mediterannean Gull2 (at mouth), Common Kingfisher 1, lots of warblers, Northern Wheatears, Whinchats.
Meladia Valley - Ortolan 3, Rufous Bush Robin 2, Collared Flycatchers (loads) plus lots of warblers, Whinchats.
Skala Kallonis - poss Baillon's Crake on pool, Great Spotted Cuckoo (early am only) nr Hotel Pasiphae, Serin and Mediterannean Gull in fielsd opp Hotel Pasiphae.
Christou (Kamares) River - Hen Harrier fem (morning), Marsh Sandpiper 5, Sandwich Tern 8, Black Stork, White Stork, Stone-curlew.
Aghios Ioannis - Ortolan Bunring 1, Cinereous Bunting at chapel, Cretzschmar's Bunting, Short-toed Eagle.
Kalloni Saltpans (inc. floods and fields) - Golden Oriole 2 flying north and Common Kingfisher in SW corner (only news received from here!).
Metochi Lake - Little Crake 13+, Little Bittern 1, Pallid Swift 2, Savis' Warbler 1, Collared Flycatcher 2 males, Great Reed Warbler (many), Common Kingfisher, Common Redstart.
Kavaki - Ruppell's Warbler 1 male only performing very well on seaward side of road from main parking area, Blue Rock-thrush 4, Crag Martin, Sardinian Warbler 3. Large passage of hinrundines and Spanish Sparrows. Collared Flycatcher 2 in almond grove by track plus Wood Warbler 2.
Perasma Reservoir - Thrush Nightingale 1, Collared Flycatcher 1, Common Cuckoo 2 inc rufous fem, Ruddy Shelduck 2, Little Stint 1, Green Sandpiper 1, Common Sandpiper 1, Orphean Warbler, Hoopoe 4.
Soumouria (Kalloni Mini Soccer Pitch) - Scops Owl, 2 single birds found roosting inc. one to right of taverna in Eucalyptus with the green wheelie bin below it - look up right hand side of trunk to c.8m. Please do not disturb them!
Achladeri Forest - picnic site - pr of Kruper's Nuhatches seen on and off during the day around the shattered tree stump (with electricity cables at top) just beyond the white building.
Almiropotamos River (Vatera) and Vourkou River - more Collared Flycatchers, Whinchats, Crag Martins, Pied Flycatcher, Squacco Heron and Spanish Sparrows.
Out west (Meladia, Sigri Ipsilou areas) - loads of Collared Flycatchers and warblers. No shrike influx yet. Also Hobby, Red-footed Falcon, Long-legged Buzzard, Little Crake (presumably at Meladia ford).
